‘Twin Peaks’: Hear Sheryl Lee Read ‘The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer’

With exactly two months to go until the May 21 return of Twin Peaks, now is the perfect time to start rewatching the show’s original two-season run, plus its prequel movie, Fire Walk With Me. But you can’t be a true Peaks completist if you overlook one more piece of David Lynch’s intricately constructed puzzle: The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer. Originally published in 1990 — between the first and second seasons, when Peaks-mania was at its height — this epistolary novel spans 10 years in the life of Laura Palmer, the victim at the center of the show’s elaborate mythology. Now you can now hear Laura Palmer’s story read by Laura herself: Actress Sheryl Lee has recorded an all-new audio version of the book, which will be released on May 2, exclusively at Audible.com. (Watch Lee discuss the experience of reading her alter ego’s words in the exclusive video above.)

Whether you’re a longtime fan of Twin Peaks or coming to it for the first time, Laura’s diary is an essential part of the story. Penned by Lynch’s daughter, writer/director Jennifer Lynch, the novel provides plenty of context to her short life, as well as clues about the circumstances of her death. “Reading Laura’s diary now, from the perspective of a woman and an adult, I have a new tenderness and compassion for her struggle,” Lee says, adding, “It’s a scream for help.” Expect that scream to reverberate just as loudly when we re-enter the small Washington town of Twin Peaks this May.

The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer will be available to download on May 2 at Audible.com. Twin Peaks premieres on May 21 at 9 p.m. on Showtime.
