Facebook versus The Pirate Bay: 1-0

On March 29th, The Pirate Bay launched a new feature allowing its visitors to share Torrents via their Facebook profiles. On April 8th, Facebook started blocking all links to The Pirate Bay’s torrents with the following message:

Warning: This Message Contains Blocked Content – Some content in this message has been reported as abusive by Facebook users.

A Facebook spokesman named Barry Schnitt explains:

Facebook respects copyrights and our Terms of Service prohibits placement of ‘Share on Facebook’ links on sites that contain any content that is infringing. Given the controversy surrounding The Pirate Bay and the pending lawsuit against them, we’ve reached out to The Pirate Bay and asked them to remove the ‘Share on Facebook’ links from their site. The Pirate Bay has not responded and so we have blocked their torrents from being shared on Facebook.

Strangely enough, thepiratebay.se and similar sites like Mininova and isoHunt haven’t been blacklisted, even though some of them offer the same “Share on Facebook” button. However, it is imposible to completely ban Torrents from Facebook, as file sharers have already started using URL shortening services such as TinyURL, is.gd and bit.ly to cloak their torrents. The Pirate Bay has also announced it will be launching a workaround soon.
